If Gatsby Was An Animal He Would Be

If Gatsby Was An Animal He Would Be

Okay, let's play a game. What if Jay Gatsby wasn't a mysterious millionaire? What if he was… an animal? It's a weird question, I know. But bear with me! We're not talking about his personality. We're diving deep into his essence. His vibe. His overall Gatsby-ness. And frankly, some choices are obvious. Others? Well, they might just ruffle some feathers.

The Obvious Choices (and Why They're Wrong)

A peacock, right? Flashy. Showy. Loves attention. It’s a popular pick. I disagree. Too on the nose. Gatsby's more subtle. He’s not just about the bling. He's about the illusion. The idea of wealth. Peacocks are just... loud.

Maybe a lion? King of the jungle! Rich, powerful... But again, too obvious. Lions are confident. Gatsby? He’s masking a deep insecurity. Remember the green light? A lion doesn’t pine for a green light. A lion takes what it wants.

Some might even suggest a wolf. Lone wolf. Alpha. Mysterious. Nope. Wolves have packs. They're about community. Gatsby is fundamentally alone. Surrounded by people, sure, but desperately lonely at his core.

My Unpopular Opinion: Gatsby is a...

...a swan.

Yes, a swan. Hear me out! On the surface, graceful and elegant. Gliding effortlessly on the water. Everyone admires them. See the similarity to Gatsby's public persona?

But beneath the surface? Constant paddling. Working like crazy just to stay afloat. That's Gatsby too! He's constantly hustling. Maintaining the facade. All that bootlegging and questionable business dealings? He’s paddling furiously!

And let's not forget the aggression! Swans are territorial. They'll hiss and attack to protect what's theirs. Sound familiar? Gatsby's obsession with Daisy is nothing if not territorial. He wants her back. He'll do anything to get her. He’s the swan hissing at any perceived threat to his love (or, more accurately, his idea of love).

Plus, swans are often seen in pairs. Symbolizing romance and devotion. Only... what if one swan isn't quite as devoted as the other? What if one swan is living in a fantasy world built on the past? Hmm….

Think about it. The beautiful white feathers. The long, elegant neck. The seemingly effortless grace. That's the Gatsby everyone sees. But scratch the surface, and you find a creature working tirelessly, desperately, just to keep up appearances. A creature capable of surprising bursts of aggression. A creature ultimately driven by… well, maybe a bit of misplaced romanticism.

Other Contenders (Just for Fun)

A squirrel: Constantly gathering nuts (money) in a frantic attempt to prepare for… something. Always burying them. Never quite satisfied. But maybe too small for Gatsby's grand ambitions.

A chameleon: Changing his colors to fit in. Trying to be what everyone expects him to be. Definitely a contender, but lacks the raw, desperate energy of our swan.

A goldfish: Living in a gilded bowl. Surrounded by beautiful things. But ultimately trapped. A sad, lonely existence. This one hits a little too close to home, doesn't it?

So, What Do You Think?

Am I crazy? Probably. But next time you see a swan, think of Jay Gatsby. Think of the relentless paddling beneath the surface. The hidden aggression. The desperate longing. Maybe, just maybe, you'll see what I see.

Or maybe you'll just see a bird. That's okay too.
