Real Pentration In Movies

Okay, let's talk movies. Specifically, movie magic. We all know it's there. We suspend disbelief. We let ourselves get swept away. But sometimes, a little voice in the back of your head whispers, "Wait a minute…" And that's where I’m going with this.
The Unspoken Truth About… Stuff Going Through Stuff
I'm talking about penetration. Not that kind! Get your mind out of the gutter. I mean, objects. Bullets through glass. Swords through… well, bad guys. You know, action movie stuff.
Think about it. You’re watching a car chase. A bullet smashes through the windshield. Cool! But… what actually happened? Did they really shoot a bullet at a windshield? Probably not. Safety first, folks!
Must Read
And the swords? Gladiator was awesome. But I'm betting Russell Crowe wasn't really impaling anyone. Though, he did look convincing.
My unpopular opinion? I think movie penetration (still talking about objects!) is often… underwhelming. Hear me out.
It’s like, we've seen it all before. Bullet hits window. Window cracks. Car explodes. Yawn.

Where's the creativity? Where's the… oomph?
The Problem with Predictability
Here's the thing. We expect certain things. We expect glass to shatter in a certain way. We expect metal to bend. We’re conditioned by years of movie tropes.
But real life? Real life is messy. Real life is unpredictable. A bullet might ricochet. A sword might get stuck. A window might just… survive. (Okay, maybe not in a Michael Bay movie.)

Imagine a movie where a character tries to break a window with a chair. And the chair just bounces off. Awkward silence. That’s the kind of unexpected realism I'm craving!
A Call for More… Interesting Penetration
I'm not saying every movie needs to be hyper-realistic. I enjoy a good superhero flick as much as the next person. But sometimes, I wish filmmakers would push the boundaries. Surprise us!
Think about the sound design, too. A bullet shattering glass should sound… different. Maybe higher pitched. Maybe with more bass. Experiment! Don't just rely on the same old sound effects library.

And the visuals! Slow-motion is great, but what about playing with perspective? What about showing the ripple effect of a bullet traveling through water before it hits its target?
We need more artistic penetration. Not just for the sake of gore, but for the sake of visual storytelling.
Examples of (Almost) Good Penetration
There are a few movies that get it right, or at least come close. I always thought the way the arrows impacted the shields in Lord of the Rings felt weighty and impactful. You could feel the force.

And some of the practical effects in early action movies (think Terminator 2) still hold up because they were, you know, real. They weren't CGI. They had a tangible quality.
But overall, I think we can do better.
So, Hollywood, if you're listening: I'm issuing a challenge. Give us more interesting, more creative, more surprising… penetration. Please. For the love of cinema! And maybe, just maybe, stop exploding every car. Just a thought.
What do you think? Am I alone in this? Or are you also secretly craving more… interesting object-on-object action? Let me know!
