Qatar Airways Special Assistance For Elderly

Qatar Airways Special Assistance For Elderly

Okay, let's talk about flying. Specifically, flying with…seasoned travelers. You know, the ones who've probably seen more sunrises than you've had coffees. And more importantly, flying with them on Qatar Airways, a pretty swanky airline.

Now, I'm just gonna say it: I might have a slight, teeny-tiny, perhaps controversial opinion about special assistance programs for the elderly. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping people who need it. Absolutely! But sometimes…well, sometimes it feels like airlines are tiptoeing around everyone, afraid of ruffling any feathers.

And I get it. They don't want to be accused of anything. Airlines these days face many challenges, and the last thing they want is another social media firestorm. So, they offer all sorts of Qatar Airways Special Assistance.

But here's the thing: some of these "seasoned travelers" are tougher than a two-dollar steak. They've navigated bustling markets in Morocco, climbed ancient ruins in Greece, and probably even haggled for carpets in Turkey. And here we are, practically offering to carry them onto the plane in a sedan chair!

The Wheelchair Tango

Let's talk wheelchairs. Ah, the mighty wheelchair. Suddenly, Grandma, who power-walks to bingo every Tuesday, mysteriously needs a wheelchair the moment she steps foot in the airport. It's like some kind of magical transformation! Suddenly, she's incapable of walking more than five feet. And then, poof! Back to normal as soon as she smells the Duty-Free perfume.

I'm not saying everyone who uses airport wheelchair service is faking it. Not at all. There are definitely legitimate needs. But honestly, sometimes it feels like a free ride to the front of the security line. And who can blame them? Airline travel is stressful! Cut the line? I’m in!

And let's not forget the airline staff. Bless their hearts! They are so patient. So incredibly, wonderfully patient. They explain everything, slowly and clearly, multiple times. And I'm sitting there, thinking, "My grandpa can probably build a rocket ship from spare parts, I think he can work out the seating chart!"

The Extra Attention Epidemic

And then there's the extra attention. The constant checking in. The repeated offers of blankets and pillows. The careful explanations of how to buckle a seatbelt (which, let's face it, hasn't changed since the Wright brothers). It’s like flying with your mom... which is not a bad thing!

Look, I'm all for being courteous and helpful. But at what point does it become infantilizing? At what point does it imply that just because someone has a few more wrinkles, they've suddenly lost all their cognitive function?

"Oh, dear, are you sure you know how to work the TV screen? Let me show you, even though you've probably watched more movies than I've been alive!"

It's like airlines are walking on eggshells, terrified of offending anyone. But maybe, just maybe, some of these "elderly" travelers would appreciate being treated like the seasoned pros they are. A friendly smile, a helping hand when needed, sure. But not the full-blown, white-glove treatment that borders on patronizing.

The Unpopular Opinion

So, here's my unpopular opinion: Qatar Airways (and other airlines) could probably dial back the Special Assistance a notch. Trust that some of these travelers have got this. They’ve seen the world. They know how to travel. And they probably know more than you do about navigating an airport.

Give them a little credit. Let them show off their travel savvy. And maybe, just maybe, they'll actually enjoy the flight a little more. And who knows, maybe they'll even give you a few travel tips of their own. They probably know the best spot to buy carpets in Istanbul, after all.

And if they truly need help? Of course, be there! But let's not automatically assume that every silver-haired traveler needs to be coddled like a newborn baby. Some of them are secretly wishing you'd just let them get on with their trip and maybe even enjoy a sneaky gin and tonic in peace.

Because sometimes, all they really need is a little respect, and maybe an extra pillow… but on their own terms.
