Hades And Persephone Books

Hades And Persephone Books

Okay, let's talk about Hades and Persephone. Specifically, the books. Are you also obsessed? I have a confession to make. It's a bit…unpopular.

I think some of them are way overhyped. There! I said it. Don't hate me.

The Allure of the Underworld Romance

Let’s be real, the idea is fantastic. A dark, broody god falling for a vibrant, sun-kissed goddess? Count me in! Opposites attract, right?

The original myth has, uh, issues. We’re talking forced abduction. But the retellings? They offer a chance to rewrite that narrative. To give Persephone agency. That's what pulls us in.

We want the power dynamic explored! We want healthy communication. We want…spicy scenes. And, well, sometimes we get them. Sometimes…not so much.

The Problem with Pretty Covers

Seriously, have you seen some of these covers? Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. They lure you in like a siren song.

But then you read the book and it’s…meh. The writing is clunky. The characters are flat. The plot? Let’s not even go there.

It’s like ordering a gourmet-looking cake that tastes like cardboard. Heartbreaking! I feel betrayed by the pretty cover.

Toxic Tropes: Are We Over Them?

Look, I love a good dark romance as much as the next person. But some of these books lean hard into toxic tropes.

Obsession? Fine, to a point. Stalking? Nope. Controlling behavior masked as "protection"? Absolutely not! Hades should be a good guy, not a red flag farm.

I know, I know, artistic license. But some lines shouldn't be crossed. Boundaries, people! Learn them, love them, respect them.

The Insta-Love Issue

Another pet peeve? Insta-love. They meet, lock eyes, and BAM! Suddenly they're soulmates forever.

Where’s the build-up? Where's the tension? Where's the awkward first date where Hades accidentally sets the olive oil on fire?

Give me a slow burn! Give me pining! Give me some actual development before they’re declaring their undying love. Please and thank you.

The Repetitive Plotlines

Okay, this is where I really get controversial. How many Hades and Persephone retellings can one person read before they all start to blur together?

Hades and Persephone - a touch of darkness
Hades and Persephone - a touch of darkness

She’s innocent. He’s brooding. She gets kidnapped (or “taken”). She learns to love the Underworld. They fight for their love. The end.

Don't get me wrong, some authors put a fantastic spin on it! But after a while, it feels like I'm reading the same story over and over again. A little originality, please!

My Unpopular Opinion: Focus on the World-Building

Honestly, I’d love to see more focus on the Underworld itself. Less on the romance, more on the mythology.

Give me intricate descriptions of the landscape! Show me the different realms! Let’s explore the creatures that dwell there!.

I want to know more about Cerberus, Thanatos, and all the other cool residents of the Underworld. The love story is important, but so is the setting!

So, Am I Quitting Hades and Persephone Books?

Absolutely not! I'm a sucker for a good myth retelling. And when they're done well? Chef's kiss.

I'm just saying, let’s be a little more discerning. Let's not fall for the pretty covers and the overhyped reviews.

Let's demand more substance! More originality! And maybe, just maybe, a little less insta-love. Happy reading!

Final thoughts.

"The only way to know if a Hades and Persephone book is good is to read it."
