Gi Joe Knowing Is Half The Battle Meme

Gi Joe Knowing Is Half The Battle Meme

Alright, let's talk about something near and dear to my, and probably your, childhood. G.I. Joe. Specifically, that ending bit. You know, the public service announcement (PSA)?

I'm talking about the "Now you know!" segment. And the famous tagline: "Knowing is half the battle!" It’s iconic. But… here's my unpopular opinion.

Is Knowing Really Half The Battle?

Let’s be honest. Sometimes, knowing something doesn't really help at all. Doesn't it feel like a simple "knowing" doesn't translate to actual success?

Think about it. You know you should eat healthier. You know you should exercise more. But are you suddenly rocking a six-pack and subsisting solely on kale smoothies?

Probably not. Me neither.

Knowing that smoking is bad for you doesn't magically make you quit. Knowing the dangers of online scams doesn't mean you won't ever accidentally click a suspicious link.

The "Knowing" Paradox

The G.I. Joe PSA's usually involved some kid making a questionable decision. Then, G.I. Joe swoops in to impart some wisdom. Cue the "Knowing is half the battle!" line.

But sometimes, the kid already knew! They just didn't care in the moment. Peer pressure, impulsive decisions... life gets in the way. It's all about that follow through.

Let’s say a kid in the G.I. Joe universe already knows not to talk to strangers. A mysterious stranger approaches anyway, offering free candy. Is the battle half-won just because the kid has been taught stranger danger?

I think not. Temptation is a powerful foe.

What about homework? We all know we should do it. But the siren song of video games, Netflix, or even just staring blankly at the ceiling is often too strong.

Knowing the Pythagorean theorem doesn’t magically make you pass your math test if you didn’t practice applying it. It's all about application.

The Other Half of the Battle: Action

So, what's the other half? Well, that's the tricky part. It's the action. It's the willpower. It's the actually doing the thing you know you should do.

It's resisting that extra slice of pizza. It's getting out of bed for that early morning run. It's saying "no" to the tempting offer of questionable origin. That is the true battle.

It's not enough to know that you should save money. You actually have to save money. You need a plan. You need discipline.

Knowing is the map. Action is the journey. And sometimes, that journey is uphill, through mud, and filled with Cobra commandos (metaphorically speaking, of course).

Maybe a more accurate slogan would be: "Knowing is a small part of the battle, the rest is hard work and resisting temptation!" It doesn't have the same ring, does it?

Perhaps that's why G.I. Joe kept it simple.

The Meme-ification of Knowledge

The "Knowing is half the battle" quote has lived on as a meme. People use it ironically. It shows just how knowing something doesn’t always guarantee success.

It gets applied to all sorts of situations. From failing at cooking to accidentally replying-all to a company-wide email. It has a universal appeal.

We've all been there. Armed with knowledge. But completely lacking in the execution department.

It's a comfort, in a way. To know that everyone struggles with the same fundamental problem. Knowing what to do is easier than doing it.

So, the next time you find yourself reciting the G.I. Joe mantra, remember this: You might know what to do, but the real battle is just beginning. Get ready to fight!

Yo Joe! Now you really know.
