Who Does Esmeralda End Up With

Let's talk about The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Specifically, who really should have ended up with Esmeralda. I know, I know, it's a controversial topic. Everyone has their opinion.
The Usual Suspects
First, there's Captain Phoebus. The dashing soldier. The eye candy. He’s got the looks, sure. But let’s be honest, he's kind of a jerk. He’s engaged! And he only seems interested in Esmeralda for, well, shall we say, less-than-honorable reasons. He's basically using her. A total cad! Case closed. No way should Esmeralda choose him.
Then there's Quasimodo. The titular hunchback. He's got the heart of gold! He's loyal, kind, and completely devoted to Esmeralda. He risks everything to save her. He’s the underdog everyone roots for. But... let's be real. Is it romantic love, or is it extreme gratitude mixed with a touch of unrequited puppy love? It’s tough to say.
Must Read
He provides her with friendship and protection. He adores her beauty and kindness. We feel sorry for him, of course. And he does get the short end of the stick, that's for sure. But does that mean Esmeralda has to choose him?
The Problem with Forever
Here's my unpopular opinion: Maybe Esmeralda shouldn't end up with anyone romantically. Hear me out! It's the 15th century! Life is tough! Maybe her happily ever after isn’t about finding a man. Maybe it's about surviving, maintaining her independence, and sticking to her beliefs. Maybe it's about fighting the system!

Think about it. Both Phoebus and Quasimodo, in their own ways, kind of objectify her. Phoebus sees her as a conquest. Quasimodo puts her on a pedestal. Does Esmeralda have any agency in these relationships? Does anyone actually listen to what she wants?
My "Radical" Suggestion
So, who does Esmeralda really end up with? She ends up with herself! She chooses her own path. She prioritizes her freedom. She remains true to who she is, despite the odds. She embodies strength and resilience. That’s a powerful message.

Imagine an ending where Esmeralda escapes. She disappears into the crowd. Maybe she joins a group of traveling performers. Maybe she helps other persecuted people. She becomes a symbol of hope and resistance. She lives a life on her own terms. A life of her own making.
Okay, okay, I know. It's not the Disney ending. It's not the romantic fairy tale. But isn't it a more realistic, empowering, and ultimately, more satisfying conclusion for such a strong female character? Esmeralda deserves more than just being someone’s prize.

She doesn't need a man to complete her story. Her story is about fighting for what’s right. About standing up to injustice. About remaining true to herself, no matter the cost. And maybe, just maybe, that’s a more compelling love story than any romance could ever be.
So, the next time you watch The Hunchback of Notre Dame, consider this. Maybe Esmeralda's true love is herself. Maybe her happily ever after is just beginning when she walks away from it all. Food for thought!
Maybe her real destiny lies beyond the bell tower and the charming (but flawed) men vying for her attention.
What do you think? Am I completely off base? Or is Esmeralda better off riding solo?
