Feeling Uncomfortable In My Own Skin

Feeling Uncomfortable In My Own Skin

Okay, so, real talk? Sometimes – scratch that – a lot of the time, I feel like I'm wearing someone else's clothes. You know that feeling? Like you're just… not quite yourself. Like you're playing a character in a movie, and you forgot your lines. And the director is staring. Yeah, that feeling.

It's not even always a dramatic, "I hate my life!" kind of feeling. It's more of a low hum. A subtle static clinging to the edges of my being. Like a badly tuned radio, only instead of crackly music, it's crackly me. Anyone else ever experience this?

Maybe it’s the way my jeans fit today (too tight, naturally – because everything's shrinking in the wash, right?). Or maybe it's the way I said "good morning" to the barista, and it came out sounding like a strangled frog. Who knows? The point is, I'm just not vibing with Brand: Me, circa Today.

And honestly, where does this even come from? Is it societal pressure? Am I secretly trying to be someone I'm not? Am I just hangry? The existential questions keep me up at night, I swear.

Let's be real, social media doesn’t help, does it? Scrolling through Instagram, seeing everyone else looking effortlessly perfect, doing unbelievably cool things. It's a highlight reel of awesomeness, and I'm just sitting here in my mismatched socks, wondering if I should order pizza again. Pizza is never wrong, though, is it?

It's like there's this invisible expectation of how I should be. A perfect, productive, aesthetically pleasing version of myself. But what if I just want to be a slightly-messy, comfortably-imperfect human who enjoys naps and bad reality TV? Is that so wrong?

So, what do we do about this whole "uncomfortable skin" situation? Well, I'm still figuring it out. But I've got a few ideas, and you’re welcome to steal them. Consider it a self-help gift.

Little Things That (Sometimes) Help:

1. Recognize the feeling. This is key! Acknowledge that you're feeling out of sorts. Don't just try to power through it like some kind of robot. (Unless you are a robot, in which case, carry on.) Say to yourself (or whisper to your cat), "Okay, I'm feeling a little weird today. That's okay."

2. Do something nice for yourself. It doesn't have to be a spa day (although, let's be honest, a spa day sounds amazing right now). Maybe it's just making a cup of tea, taking a walk in the park, or listening to your favorite song. Small acts of self-care can make a big difference. I may bake a batch of cookies later, just saying. (Maybe I'll share.)

3. Focus on your strengths. What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? Spend some time doing those things! It's a great way to remind yourself that you're awesome, even if you don't feel like it at the moment. I can write, and I can make my friends laugh (sometimes at my expense). Those are my strengths! What are yours?

4. Talk to someone you trust. Seriously! Vent to a friend, family member, or therapist. Just getting your feelings out in the open can be incredibly helpful. Plus, misery loves company, right? (Just kidding… mostly.)

5. Cut yourself some slack. This is the most important one! You're human. You're allowed to have bad days. You're allowed to feel uncomfortable sometimes. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just remember that it won't last forever. This too shall pass. And maybe, just maybe, tomorrow your jeans will fit a little bit better. (Fingers crossed!) I'm giving you a permission slip to feel what you need to feel.

So, yeah. That's my story. I'm still figuring out this whole "being comfortable in my own skin" thing. But I'm working on it. And maybe, just maybe, sharing this with you has made me feel a little bit better. Thanks for listening (or reading, whatever). Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go find those cookies...
