Disney Mickey Mouse 90th Anniversary Watch Remove Battery

Disney Mickey Mouse 90th Anniversary Watch Remove Battery

Okay, so picture this: I’m rummaging through my old jewelry box, searching for that perfect necklace to wear to a friend's party. And what do I find nestled amongst the tangled chains and forgotten earrings? My old Disney Mickey Mouse 90th Anniversary watch! I’d almost forgotten I even had it. It’s super cute, gold plated, and… completely dead. The little mouse hands are frozen in time. Cue the sad trombone.

Naturally, my first thought wasn't "Oh, I'll just get it professionally repaired!" Nope. My brain immediately went to "I can totally do this myself! How hard can it be to change a watch battery?" Famous last words, right?

And that, my friends, is how I embarked on the slightly terrifying (but ultimately successful!) journey of removing the battery from my beloved, but battery-less, Mickey Mouse watch. So, if you’re in the same boat – rocking a vintage Disney timepiece with a ticker that’s… well, not ticking – then keep reading. This might just save you a trip to the watch repair shop and a few precious dollars. (Plus, bragging rights, obviously.)

Tools of the Trade (aka What You’ll Need)

Alright, before we dive in headfirst, let’s gather our supplies. Think of this as your watch-battery-removal survival kit. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A small, flat-head screwdriver. And I mean small. We’re talking tiny, miniature, Lilliputian levels of smallness. (Think eyeglass repair kit size.)
  • A watch case opener tool. You can usually find these online or at a hobby store. Or, if you're feeling brave (and slightly reckless like me), you might be able to get away with a very thin, sturdy knife. But proceed with caution! Seriously, don't blame me if you scratch your watch.
  • Tweezers. Plastic or coated metal ones are best to avoid shorting anything out.
  • A soft cloth. To protect your watch from scratches, natch.
  • A new watch battery. (Duh!) Check the old battery’s markings to get the right replacement. Don’t just guess! (Been there, done that. Doesn't work.)
  • Good lighting. Trust me, you’ll need it. These things are tiny!

And perhaps most importantly, patience. Lots and lots of patience.

Opening the Case: Proceed with Caution!

Okay, this is where things get a little… delicate. Your Mickey Mouse watch probably has a snap-on back, meaning it’s held in place by pressure. This is where the watch case opener (or your carefully chosen, thin knife) comes in.

Gently insert the tool into the small groove along the edge of the watch back. Carefully pry the back off. Don’t force it! You want to ease it open, not Hulk-smash it. If it’s really stubborn, try a different spot along the edge.

Once you get a little opening, you might be able to use your fingernail (carefully!) to help pop the back off completely. Just remember, be gentle!. We don’t want any scratches or dents on our precious Mickey.

Side note: Some watches have screw-down backs. If you see tiny screws, you'll need a very small screwdriver to remove them. Don't try to pry it open if it has screws!

Battery Removal: Tiny But Mighty

Alright, you’ve cracked the case! Now you should see the watch movement and, most importantly, the battery. The battery is usually held in place by a small metal clip or bracket.

Using your tweezers, gently lift the clip or bracket to release the battery. Be careful not to bend or damage it. Once the clip is loose, the battery should pop out (or at least be easily removable) with the tweezers.

Pro Tip: Take a picture of the battery's orientation before you remove it. This will save you a headache when you're putting the new one in.

Inserting the New Battery: Almost There!

Now for the moment of truth! Take your new battery and, using the tweezers, carefully place it in the same orientation as the old one. Make sure the positive (+) and negative (-) sides are facing the correct way. This is where that picture you took earlier comes in handy!

Once the battery is in place, use your tweezers to gently secure the metal clip or bracket. Make sure it’s holding the battery snugly.

Closing the Case: Victory Lap!

Almost there! Now it’s time to snap the watch back on. Line it up carefully and gently press down until it clicks into place. You should hear a distinct “snap” indicating it’s secure.

And that’s it! Hopefully, your Mickey Mouse watch is now ticking away happily. If not, double-check the battery orientation and make sure the clip is holding it securely. If it still doesn’t work, then maybe it’s time to admit defeat and take it to a professional.

But hey, you gave it a shot! And even if it didn’t work out perfectly, you still learned something (and probably saved yourself a little money). Now go forth and conquer your next DIY project! And maybe, just maybe, invest in a proper watch repair kit next time. 😉
