Wayne Gretzky Pro Set 1990 All Star Game

Wayne Gretzky Pro Set 1990 All Star Game

Okay, so, let's talk hockey cards. Specifically, that Wayne Gretzky card. You know the one. The 1990 Pro Set All-Star Game card. Remember those days? The mullet era, the shoulder pads... good times!

Seriously though, Pro Set. What was the deal with Pro Set? They were everywhere, weren't they? Like, suddenly everybody was a card manufacturer. But hey, that meant more Gretzky, right? I'm not complaining. Much.

And Gretzky in the All-Star Game... pure magic. Did the guy ever have a bad game? I doubt it. He probably scored a hat trick in his sleep. The Great One, indeed.

I remember ripping open packs hoping for this card. You'd get, like, five Kirk Muller cards in a row. No offense to Kirk, but... c'mon! We wanted Gretzky! Didn’t we all?

This particular card, though. It's not, like, super rare or anything. You're not gonna retire off of selling one. But it’s still a classic. It screams 1990s hockey. Plus, it has The Great One on it. Do you really need more reason to want it?

Think about it: 1990. Grunge wasn't quite grunge yet. MC Hammer was still doing his thing. And Wayne Gretzky was still dominating the ice. Man, those were simpler times, weren't they? Except for trying to pull this card. That felt like work, sometimes!

And Pro Set's design? It was… well, it was Pro Set. Not exactly Upper Deck, am I right? But it had a certain charm, didn’t it? All that busy-ness. The little logo. The glossy finish that showed every fingerprint known to man.

You gotta wonder, what was Gretzky thinking during that All-Star Game? Probably plotting his next goal. Maybe thinking about what to have for dinner. Who knows? He was probably operating on a different plane of existence than the rest of us mere mortals.

Let's be honest, the back of the card probably had some stats that were already outdated the moment the card was printed. But who cares? It's Gretzky! The stats are just window dressing at that point.

The thing I always loved about All-Star games, especially back then, was seeing all the legends on one ice. Messier, Yzerman, Hull... and Gretzky, of course, shining brighter than all the rest. Those were teams you actually wanted to watch!

And you know what’s funny? You can probably still find these cards at your local card shop, or online for a few bucks. A piece of hockey history for less than the price of a fancy coffee. What a steal!

I bet there are people out there with boxes and boxes of these cards, just waiting for the right moment to unleash them on the world. Maybe they’re hoping to find some hidden value. Maybe they just like hoarding cardboard. Who are we to judge?

Why this card matters?

It’s a reminder of a simpler time. A time when hockey was king (well, one of the kings, anyway). A time when mullets were fashionable (debatable, I know). And a time when Wayne Gretzky was, well, Wayne Gretzky. The best there ever was, the best there ever will be.

It’s also a reminder of how collecting was back then. Ripping packs, trading with friends, sticking them in those awful plastic sleeves that always stuck together... pure nostalgia!

So, next time you're browsing through old hockey cards, keep an eye out for that 1990 Pro Set All-Star Game Gretzky. It might not be the most valuable card in the world, but it's definitely got a story to tell. A story of The Great One, Pro Set madness, and the glorious 90s.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go dig through my old collection. Maybe, just maybe, I'll find one. Or maybe I'll just find another Kirk Muller card. We'll see!
