Unlimited Metrocard Price 2014

Unlimited Metrocard Price 2014

Okay, let's talk about something that still gives me shivers: the 2014 unlimited Metrocard. Remember those days? Simpler times, maybe. Or were they?

I know, I know, everyone loves the unlimited Metrocard. Freedom! Mobility! The sheer joy of swiping without fear!

But hear me out. I have a confession. A slightly…unpopular opinion. Buckle up, folks.

My 2014 Metrocard Revelation

Don't get me wrong. I appreciated the 2014 unlimited Metrocard. I really did. Especially when the L train was…being the L train.

It was a beautiful, beautiful crutch, wasn't it?

But something about it felt…wrong. Like eating ice cream for every meal. Glorious in the moment, questionable in the long run.

The "Just Because I Can" Mentality

With that unlimited pass, did anyone else find themselves taking completely unnecessary subway trips? I did! Admit it, you did too!

“Oh, I need to buy milk. And the closest store is…seven stops away? Perfect!”

Walking? Exercise? What were those things? The Metrocard was my personal chariot.

Remember meeting a friend for a coffee and hopping on the train to go one stop to the coffee shop? I do! The guilt is still somewhere in my conscience.

Overcrowding, My Old Friend

Let's be real. New York City subways are always crowded. But the unlimited Metrocard? I think it encouraged even more unnecessary ridership.

Suddenly, every train felt like a sardine can convention. Fun times! Not really.

Maybe, just maybe, a tiered system would have helped. You know, charged by the ride! Encourage a little more conscious travel.

The Cost of "Unlimited"

Think about the economics of it all. "Unlimited" isn't really unlimited, is it? Someone's paying for it.

And let's be real, the price of the unlimited card went up over time didn't it? It went from around $112 a month to $116.50. And continues to go up as of 2023!

We were all paying for those extra, unnecessary trips. Including my milk run seven stops away.

A Controversial Conclusion (Maybe?)

So, here it is. My unpopular opinion. Brace yourselves.

I think the 2014 unlimited Metrocard was…a little too good. Too tempting. Too enabling of my lazy, milk-run habits.

Maybe, just maybe, we were better off with a slightly more restricted system. One that encouraged a little more walking, a little more planning, a little less sardine-can riding.

Of course, this is all purely hypothetical. A nostalgic musing on a bygone era. Or, you know, not.

Hear Me Out! (Again)

I’m not saying the unlimited Metrocard is the root of all evil. Far from it! It certainly made navigating this glorious, chaotic city easier.

And let’s be honest, who wants to calculate the cost of every single ride? The mental math alone is enough to give anyone a headache.

But… just maybe… a little constraint can be a good thing. Right?

Or maybe I'm just completely wrong, and I should embrace the glorious, unlimited spirit of the subway. The freedom! The adventure! The occasional elbow to the face!

I don’t know. Maybe. Perhaps. But I do know the 2014 Metrocard will always be in my heart.

And maybe it's time I start walking for milk again. Maybe.

In all seriousness, thanks to MTA for keeping New York rolling!
