Skyrim How To Fill Soul Gems

Skyrim How To Fill Soul Gems

So, you're a Dragonborn, slayer of dragons, maybe even the Archmage of the College of Winterhold! But are you really maximizing your potential if you're running around with empty soul gems? Let's be honest, crafting powerful enchantments and keeping your favorite weapon charged with fiery destruction is a key part of the Skyrim experience. And to do that, you need souls! Filling those soul gems might seem a little mystical at first, but trust us, it's easier than shouting down a mountain.

Why bother filling soul gems? Simply put, they're your source of magical power for enchanting and weapon charging. Think of them like batteries for your magical gear. A filled soul gem lets you imbue your weapons with effects like fire damage, absorb health, or paralyze your enemies. Plus, you can permanently enchant armor and jewelry with resistances, skill boosts, and other helpful abilities. Without filled soul gems, your enchanting table is just a fancy piece of furniture, and your enchanted sword is just... a sword.

The Soul Trap Spell: Your Soul-Snatching Essential. The first step is learning the Soul Trap spell. This is a novice level conjuration spell, easily purchased from mages at the College of Winterhold or even general goods merchants in most cities. Once you have it, equip it! When cast on an enemy, Soul Trap puts a magical "trap" on them for a short duration (usually 60 seconds). If that enemy dies while the spell is active, their soul will be captured in a soul gem in your inventory.

Choosing the Right Soul Gem: Size Matters! Not all soul gems are created equal. They come in different sizes: Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, Grand, and Black. The size of the soul gem dictates the size of the soul it can hold. Petty souls come from smaller creatures like rats and mudcrabs, while Grand souls come from powerful creatures like mammoths and giants. Important Note: Always use a soul gem that is at least the same size as the soul you're trying to capture. A Petty Soul Gem can only hold a Petty Soul! If you try to put a larger soul into a smaller gem, nothing will happen, and you'll waste the soul.

The Black Soul Gem Exception. Black Soul Gems are special. They can hold the souls of humans and other sentient races. Using a regular Grand Soul Gem on a human (or elf, or orc, etc.) won't work! You'll need to acquire a Black Soul Gem for those purposes. These are usually obtained through specific quests, often with a morally grey undertone, so be prepared!

Tips for Efficient Soul Trapping:

  • Carry multiple soul gems. You don't want to miss a valuable soul because your only gem is already full.
  • Use a Soul Trap weapon. Enchanting a weapon with the Soul Trap effect means you don't have to constantly cast the spell. Every time you hit an enemy with the weapon, they have a chance to be soul trapped upon death.
  • Hunt in groups. Find locations with multiple enemies, like bandit camps or caves filled with draugr, to maximize your soul-gathering potential.

So there you have it! Now you're ready to become a soul-trapping master! Go forth, Dragonborn, and fill those gems! The power to craft legendary enchantments and wield devastatingly charged weapons is now in your grasp!
