Okay, let's talk about a song. A song that's been stuck in your head at least once. A song about... well, being in someone's heart. I'm talking about "You'll Be in My Heart" from Tarzan. Yeah, that one. Phil Collins, the whole shebang.
It's a classic, right? An anthem for adoption, found family, and generally being super-duper sentimental. But, and this is a big BUT, does anyone else think it's... a little cheesy?
The Cheesy Goodness
Don't get me wrong! I love a good Disney ballad. I belt them out in the shower. My neighbors probably think I'm training for The Voice. But something about "You'll Be in My Heart" just feels a tad... forced? Like, it's trying REALLY hard to pull at my heartstrings. And sometimes, trying too hard just makes me giggle.
Think about it. "Stop crying, baby. I'll be there in a while." Okay, that's sweet. But then it launches into this epic declaration of eternal love and unwavering support. From a gorilla. Who's just met this baby. It's a lot to unpack.
“For one so small, you seem so strong
My arms will keep you safe and warm
This bond between us can't be broken
I will be here, don't you cry”

Seriously, Kerchak (or Kala, depending on who's singing), tone it down a notch! Maybe offer the kid a banana first. Build trust. Don't go straight for the lifelong commitment.
The Unpopular Opinion (Prepare Yourselves!)
Here's where I might lose some of you. Ready? I think "You'll Be in My Heart" is... dare I say it... a little overrated. There, I said it! I feel like I need to hide under the sofa now.
BABYMONSTER - Love In My Heart lyrics
It's not a bad song, mind you. Phil Collins is a musical genius. But compared to some of the other Disney power ballads, it just doesn't quite reach the same emotional depth for me. "Circle of Life"? Now THAT'S a banger. "Colors of the Wind"? Gets me every time. "Let It Go"? Okay, maybe I'm a little over that one now too, but still... it had its moment.
"You'll Be in My Heart" just feels... manufactured. Like it was written specifically to win an Oscar (which, by the way, it did). And maybe that's part of the problem. It feels like it was written for something, rather than from something. Does that make sense? Probably not. I'm just rambling at this point.
The Power of Sentimentality
Despite my slightly cynical ramblings, I do understand why people love this song. It's about unconditional love. It's about acceptance. It's about finding family where you least expect it. And those are all incredibly powerful themes.

Plus, the visuals in the movie don't hurt. Baby Tarzan clinging to Kala? Heart-melting. The animation is superb. The song is perfectly placed within the narrative. It's a whole package of emotional manipulation that I, admittedly, sometimes fall for. Especially when I'm feeling particularly vulnerable and have a craving for Ben & Jerry's.
So, Where Does That Leave Us?
Ultimately, music is subjective. What I find cheesy, you might find deeply moving. And that's perfectly okay! There's room in the world for both cynicism and sentimentality. Maybe I just need to watch Tarzan again and let the song wash over me. Maybe I'll have a change of heart. Maybe I'll still think it's a little cheesy. But hey, at least we can all agree that Phil Collins is a legend, right?

And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, you'll find me quietly singing "You'll Be in My Heart" in the grocery store someday. Just don't tell anyone I admitted to liking it (even a little bit).
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to "Circle of Life" and wallow in my superior taste in Disney soundtracks. Just kidding! (Mostly.)
P.S. Let me know in the comments if you agree or disagree! I'm ready for the backlash.
