Star Trek: Discovery Cast Vir Cotto

Star Trek: Discovery Cast Vir Cotto

Okay, let's talk about Star Trek: Discovery. Specifically, let’s talk about someone who maybe didn't get as much love as they deserved: Vir Cotto.

Now, before you sharpen your phasers and yell "Tilly forever!", hear me out. I’m not saying Vir was a main character. He wasn't saving the galaxy every Tuesday. But... wasn't he kind of awesome in his own way?

The Underdog Appeal

Think about it. Vir (played by the fantastic Doug Jones – the man is a chameleon!) was a Kelpien, like Saru. But while Saru was climbing the ranks, eventually becoming captain, Vir was… well, he was Vir. He was quietly competent. He was always there. He was the guy who probably knew where you left your PADD.

He's the unsung hero of the Discovery engineering crew. The background champion we all secretly root for. Let's be honest, we've all been Vir at some point in our lives. Stuck in the background, doing our job, hoping someone notices we’re not actively breaking things.

“But he didn't do anything important!” you might cry.

And to that, I say: Is saving the entire universe always necessary for a character to be interesting? Sometimes, it's about the little things. Like ensuring the warp drive doesn’t explode when Stamets gets a bit…enthusiastic with the spore drive.

A Touch of the Quirky

Plus, there was something wonderfully quirky about Vir. He had this quiet, almost shy demeanor. But occasionally, he'd drop a line that was just pure gold. Did anyone else notice that or was it just me?

I always got the feeling he had hidden depths. Maybe he wrote Kelpien poetry in his spare time. Maybe he was secretly a holodeck champion at some obscure Klingon strategy game. We just never got to see it! This is a wasted opportunity for all of us.

The "Why Didn't We See More?" Factor

Honestly, I think Discovery missed a trick by not developing Vir more. He could have been a fantastic counterpoint to the more dramatic characters. A grounding presence. The voice of reason (or at least, the voice that suggests maybe not charging headfirst into a Romulan minefield).

Imagine an episode where Vir has to take command of a small away team. Hilarity ensues! He’s clearly stressed, but manages to save the day with his quiet intelligence and surprising resourcefulness.

My Unpopular Opinion (Embrace Yourself)

So, here it is: I think Vir Cotto was one of the most relatable characters on Discovery. Not because he was saving the universe. But because he felt like someone you could actually meet. Someone you could grab a cup of replicated coffee with and discuss the latest warp core fluctuations. He was the every-Kelpie.

Okay, maybe I'm overstating it. Maybe I just have a soft spot for underappreciated characters. But I stand by my opinion. Vir Cotto deserved more screen time. He deserved a subplot. He deserved a chance to shine.

And if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ever decides to do a crossover episode, I'm holding out hope that we'll see a slightly older, slightly wiser, but still wonderfully quirky Vir Cotto. He could give Spock a run for his money in the logic department. Or at least, offer him a really good cup of Kelpien tea.

So, what do you think? Am I completely off my rocker? Or did Vir Cotto also steal a small piece of your Discovery-loving heart?
