My Belly Got Burnt While Pregnant

My Belly Got Burnt While Pregnant

Okay, picture this: pregnant belly, nearing full bloom. Glowing skin? Supposedly. What I actually had was more like…crispy skin. Because, folks, I managed to sunburn my pregnant belly. And not just a little pink blush. We’re talking a full-blown, lobster-red, peel-worthy sunburn.

It all started with the best of intentions. My doctor (bless her soul, she probably envisioned me gently swimming laps) had suggested I get some sun exposure for vitamin D. Living in perpetually cloudy Seattle, this felt like a monumental task. Finally, a glorious, sunny Saturday dawned. Armed with a beach towel and an optimistic spirit, I ventured out to the local park, determined to soak up those rays.

The Great Sunbathing Fail

Now, I’d been pretty careful, I thought. Slathered on sunscreen. Brought an umbrella. Limited my exposure time. But apparently, "limited" wasn't limited enough. I lay there, feeling the sun on my face, listening to the birds chirp, and mentally patting myself on the back for being such a responsible, vitamin-D-seeking pregnant woman. I even dozed off for a bit. Rookie mistake.

I woke up feeling…warm. A little too warm. And then the realization hit me. My stomach. It felt like someone had replaced it with a hot water bottle set to "broil." I scurried home, visions of aloe vera dancing in my head, but the damage was done. My once-smooth, burgeoning belly was now a vibrant shade of crimson.

The next few days were a comedy of errors. Finding clothes that didn’t rub the burn was like navigating a minefield. I resembled a perpetually uncomfortable, waddling penguin in oversized t-shirts and loose pants. My husband, Mark, bless his heart, tried his best to be sympathetic while stifling laughter. “You look like a watermelon that’s been left out in the sun too long,” he offered helpfully. Thanks, honey.

The worst part was the peeling. Oh, the peeling! It was like shedding a snake skin, only on a much larger, more awkward scale. I left a trail of dead skin wherever I went. I’m pretty sure the dog thought I was some kind of walking treat dispenser.

“Honey, are you sure you used enough sunscreen? You’re glowing…in a concerning way.” - Mark, master of understatement

Sleep was a distant memory. Every toss and turn brought a fresh wave of stinging pain. I tried every remedy under the sun (pun intended!), from aloe vera to cool compresses. Nothing seemed to provide lasting relief.

Silver Linings and Sunburns

But you know what? Through all the discomfort and awkwardness, there were some surprisingly heartwarming moments. My mom, who normally offered unsolicited advice on everything pregnancy-related, simply showed up with a tub of the most soothing aloe vera gel she could find and silently applied it to my burning belly. No lectures, no "I told you sos," just pure, unadulterated maternal care.

And then there was the baby. I started talking to her through the sunburned skin, explaining what happened and how sorry I was. I'd rub the aloe vera gently, imagining her little kicks and movements. Somehow, even through the pain, I felt closer to her. Like we were sharing this ridiculous experience together.

The sunburn eventually faded, leaving behind a slightly patchy tan and a healthy dose of paranoia about sun exposure. But it also left me with a funny story to tell, a newfound appreciation for the power of sunscreen, and a deeper connection to my unborn daughter.

So, if you’re pregnant and thinking about basking in the sun, please, for the love of all that is holy, be careful! Slather on the sunscreen, wear a hat, and limit your exposure time. Learn from my mistakes. Don’t let your pregnant belly become a crispy critter. And if it does? Well, at least you’ll have a good story to tell – and maybe, just maybe, a few heartwarming moments amidst the peeling.

And to my daughter, now a rambunctious toddler, this is a story she loves to hear. "Mommy's tummy got cooked!" she squeals with delight. And I smile, because even a sunburn can have a silver lining, especially when it involves the love of a child. The sun set on that sunburn, but the memories, and the laughter, remain.
