My Aunt Says Im Perfect Just Like Her

My Aunt Says Im Perfect Just Like Her

Okay, let's talk about something we've all probably experienced, or at least witnessed. It's that moment when a relative, usually an aunt, looks at you with a twinkle in their eye and declares, "You're just like me!"

It's like winning the genetic lottery, except the prize is... questionable. Are we talking about her legendary baking skills? Or her uncanny ability to trip over thin air? Because those are two very different levels of "just like her."

My Aunt Carol, bless her heart, is the queen of these declarations. She sees a flicker of "Carol" in everything I do. Apparently, my love for a good bargain is pure Carol. My tendency to over-pack for weekend trips? Carol through and through. And the way I dramatically sigh when the Wi-Fi goes down? You guessed it – all Carol!

It's not that I dislike being compared to her. Aunt Carol is, after all, a force of nature. She’s got the energy of a hummingbird on espresso and a wardrobe that could rival a department store. But sometimes, I wonder if she's seeing what she wants to see, you know?

I remember one time, I accidentally set off the smoke alarm while trying to make toast (don't judge, it was a really complicated piece of toast). Aunt Carol, without missing a beat, exclaimed, "See! Just like me! I once burned down the kitchen trying to make popcorn!"

I'm pretty sure burning down a kitchen and slightly over-toasting bread are not quite the same thing, but hey, who am I to argue with genetics?

The funny thing is, I can see where she's coming from. We share some quirks. We both have a slightly unhealthy obsession with reality TV. We both can talk for hours about nothing in particular. And we both believe that chocolate is a viable food group.

But then there are the things that are decidedly not Carol. I, for example, have never worn a sequined jumpsuit in public. (Aunt Carol owns at least three.) And I haven't yet mastered the art of haggling down the price of a used car by sheer force of personality. (Aunt Carol is a black belt in haggling.)

Sometimes, I think it's just her way of saying she loves me. Maybe "You're just like me!" is code for "I see myself in you, and I think you're pretty great." And if that's the case, then I'll happily accept the title of "Mini-Carol."

It's also possible that she's just trying to justify her own eccentricities by seeing them reflected in someone else. Like, "See? It's not just me! My niece does it too! It's a family trait!"

Whatever the reason, it's always good for a laugh. And it's a reminder that family is family, quirks and all. Plus, it gives me a good excuse to raid her closet when she's not looking.

So, the next time your aunt (or uncle, or grandma, or second cousin twice removed) tells you that you're exactly like them, just smile and nod. Embrace the similarities, laugh at the differences, and maybe, just maybe, ask them for a loan. After all, you're practically family!

Think of it like this: being compared to your quirky relatives is like being given a pre-written script for life, but you get to improvise most of the lines. You can choose to embrace the Carol-ness, or you can forge your own path, sequin-jumpsuit free. The choice is yours.

And hey, even if you do end up burning down the kitchen while making popcorn, at least you'll have a funny story to tell. And Aunt Carol will be so proud.

So, are you a mini-me of your aunt?

Let’s see! Do you find yourself:

  • Saying things that sound eerily familiar?
  • Making the same faces in the mirror?
  • Suddenly having a craving for prune juice and bingo?

If you answered yes to at least one, then congratulations! You’ve officially entered the “Just Like Me!” club. Wear it with pride (and maybe a sequined jumpsuit, if you’re feeling brave).
