When Is Shotgun Season For Deer In Illinois

Okay, let's talk about deer. Specifically, deer hunting in Illinois. And even more specifically, shotgun season. It’s a topic that sparks joy (for some) and dread (for others, like, you know, the deer).

Figuring out when shotgun season actually is can feel like deciphering an ancient scroll. You consult the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website. You scroll. You click. You squint. You maybe accidentally download something you shouldn't. It's a whole thing.

Generally speaking, you're looking at a couple of segments in November and December. Think late November, right after Thanksgiving (to give you something to be thankful for, I guess… or to work off all that turkey). Then, usually another weekend or two in December.

Now, here's where I might lose some of you. I have an unpopular opinion. Are you ready for it? Deep breath… I think maybe, just maybe, we should give the deer a little more breathing room. A deer spa day, perhaps? A weekend retreat where they can sip herbal tea and get a nice massage?

Okay, okay, I know. Hunting is important. It helps manage the deer population. It provides food. It's a tradition for many families. I get it. I do.

But sometimes, when I see those big, soulful deer eyes staring back at me from the side of the road (usually right before they dart out in front of my car), I just feel a pang of guilt. They're just trying to live their best deer lives, munching on grass and frolicking in the woods. Is that too much to ask?

Maybe we could shorten the season by a day? Or create a "No Hunt Sunday," dedicated to deer-related activities like interpretive dances about acorns and group meditation sessions under the oak trees. Just spitballing here.

Of course, this is probably heresy to some. I can already hear the grumbling from the hunting community. "She's gone soft!" "She doesn't understand!" "She probably eats tofu!" (Guilty on that last one, by the way.)

But hear me out. A happy deer population is a healthy deer population. And a healthy ecosystem benefits everyone, even us tofu-eating, deer-sympathizing folks.

So, When Is Shotgun Season Really?

Ultimately, you're going to have to check the official Illinois DNR website. Seriously, bookmark it. Print it out. Tattoo it on your arm. Whatever works for you. The dates change slightly year to year, and they’re broken down by county and zone. Don't rely on your neighbor's uncle's cousin's hunting buddy's interpretation. Get the official word.

Just remember to be safe, be responsible, and maybe, just maybe, consider sending a little positive energy to those deer while you're out there. Or at least bring a really good snack for yourself. Hunting is hard work!

And if you happen to see a deer wearing a tiny orange vest, please, for the love of all that is holy, don't shoot it. It's probably just lost.
