Okay, let's be real. We've all been there. Staring at that bill, the one from Edison, and wondering if we can "accidentally" forget about it for a week or two. Right?

So, a thought popped into my head the other day: Could the power company, the very one named after Thomas Edison himself, possibly be…turning off power for non-payment? Seems unthinkable, doesn't it? Like, wouldn’t Edison be a little embarrassed?

My unpopular opinion? Maybe they should. Just hear me out!

I know, I know. Pitchforks are probably being sharpened as you read this. But think about it. We live in a world where streaming services practically demand we hand over our firstborn (or at least a hefty monthly fee) or face a life devoid of binge-watching. And we pay! We somehow find the money for that.

Yet, the essential service that keeps the lights on, the fridge cold, and the internet humming? Sometimes, it gets…postponed.

Don't get me wrong. I understand. Life is expensive. Unexpected things happen. Car repairs, medical bills, that gotta-have-it gadget that seemed like a good idea at 3 AM after too much caffeine. We've all made questionable financial choices.

But at some point, don't we need to prioritize the essentials? And power? Pretty darn essential, wouldn't you say?

I'm picturing Edison HQ. A bunch of number-crunching folks, staring at spreadsheets, seeing a sea of red ink. They're thinking, "Okay, we're powering entire cities. We're keeping hospitals running. But Bob down the street is three months behind and just bought a new gaming console."

It's a tough situation. Really tough.

Maybe a little temporary darkness would be a good wake-up call. A gentle nudge, reminding us that electricity doesn't just magically appear from the wall socket. It takes infrastructure, maintenance, and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes wizardry.

And those wizards, the ones at Edison, they deserve to be paid, right?

I’m not advocating for draconian measures. We need safety nets. We need assistance programs for those who genuinely can’t afford it. Absolutely.

And let’s be honest, a few minutes of darkness might not be the worst thing in the world. Remember those board games gathering dust in the closet? Maybe it's time to dust them off. Or, gasp, talk to your family! Imagine the horror!

Okay, maybe I'm pushing it. But the point is, electricity is a privilege, a modern marvel. And it comes with a responsibility.

So, is Edison going to start turning off power for non-payment? I honestly don't know. But maybe, just maybe, it's a conversation we need to have. A frank, uncomfortable, but ultimately necessary conversation about prioritizing our resources and appreciating the things we often take for granted.
